Exhibition Design Proposal

Idea

I want to create an interactive exhibition with an aesthetic inspired by arcade machine-era graphics. I really like the 8-bit era pixel graphics. It has a really nostalgic feel and calls back to the origins of the digital age that we know. The interactive are an integral part of the exhibition, as it allows people to take part in the changing of the space itself, and provides dynamic visuals.

Floorplan

The room is arranged so that visitors enter and are presented with the main console explaining the exhibition in front of them. The student work in arranged in the four corners, and the interactives in the centre.

a. Console explaining the exhibition.
b. Mock arcade machines displaying student work.
c. Area on the walls where the interactives are projected.
d. The projections.
e. The projectors.
f. Arcade machines housing main console and interactive consoles.
g. Consoles displaying the interactives.

Division Code Test

A flash file I made to test how to divide the circles. It's really laggy.

Division Mockup

A test of how the colour and shape division would work, ending with the exhibition title.

Cool Interactive

This is something I found over at Koalas To The Max:

It starts off as a dot...

Then as you roll over...

It divides smaller and smaller...

Until eventually...

You get this picture.

Old Ideas

I was looking at some of my old stuff to see if anything could give me ideas, and I found these four. They were made in Flash for year 12. I could use these as ideas for graphics on the walls.

Spiral - This spins gradually faster. If you stare at the centre, you see some wicked patterns.

Rotation - This one also spins faster and faster. The patterns created are really crazy, shifting colours and reversing direction.

Luminescence - This creates circles which move outward and fade away.

Tunnel - Concentric rings fly at you to make it look like you are in a tunnel.

Idea 5 - The Matrix

“The Matrix is a 1999 science fiction-action film. The film depicts a future in which reality as perceived by most humans is actually a simulated reality created by sentient machines to pacify and subdue the human population.”

First, the iconic image of the scrolling green hexadecimal text on a black background.

Second, the screen filled room of the Architect.

Idea 4 - Portal

“Portal is a single-player puzzle-platform video game developed by Valve Corporation. The game consists primarily of a series of puzzles that must be solved by teleporting the player's character and simple objects using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (dubbed the "portal gun"), a device that can create inter-spatial portals between flat planes.”

Some examples of Portal in real life.

Clean, simple visuals, screens projected as ‘portals’.

Idea 3 - Arcade Games

“An arcade game is a coin-operated entertainment machine, usually installed in public businesses such as restaurants, public houses, and video arcades.”

The arcade machine is an iconic image.

Five epitomic games:

Donkey Kong

Space Invaders

Super Mario Bros

Tetris

Pac Man

Use the arcade machines to project into, and have images from popular games on the walls.
